Who needs to renew and when

Expat residents in Dubai must renew their driving licence before it expires. RTA sends SMS reminders 30 days prior, but you can check status anytime in the RTA app. Renewal is valid for one, five or ten years depending on age and nationality rules.

Prepare required documents

Have these ready before you start: Emirates ID, current driving licence, and passport copy. If your licence has been expired more than six months you must complete a new eye test and medical fitness certificate. No traffic fines should be outstanding.

Book or complete the eye test

Visit any RTA-approved optician or centre such as Al Barsha, Al Twar or Al Qusais branches. The test costs AED 100 and results upload automatically to the RTA system within 24 hours. You need 6/6 vision or corrected vision with glasses noted on the report.

Obtain medical fitness certificate

Book at DHA-approved centres including Prime Medical Centre, Medcare or American Hospital. The test covers blood pressure, vision, hearing and general fitness. Fees range from AED 300 to AED 500 depending on the centre. Results transmit directly to RTA within two working days.

Renew online via RTA app

Open the RTA Dubai app, log in with UAE Pass or Emirates ID. Select Services, then Driving Licence, then Renew. Upload the eye test and medical reports if prompted, pay the renewal fee and select delivery or collection. Standard fees are AED 400 for five years and AED 700 for ten years plus AED 20 knowledge fee.

Collect or receive the new licence

Choose home delivery for AED 30 or collect from any RTA customer happiness centre. The plastic card arrives or is ready within five working days. You can start driving immediately once payment clears.

Common issues and fixes

Outstanding fines: pay via RTA app or at any kiosk before renewal.
Expired medical report: rebook within 30 days of the original test date.
System not showing documents: wait 48 hours after the test or visit an RTA centre with printed reports.
