Why check your Salik balance regularly

Salik is Dubai’s electronic toll system run by RTA. Every time you pass a toll gate your account is debited AED 4. If the balance drops below zero you receive a fine of AED 50 plus the unpaid toll. Checking weekly prevents surprises on your next drive.

Check balance in the RTA app

Download or open the official RTA Dubai app on iOS or Android. Log in with your Emirates ID or mobile number registered to the Salik account. On the home screen tap “Salik” then “Account Balance”. The current AED figure appears instantly along with the last three transactions.

Check balance by SMS

Send the word BALANCE to 2424 from the mobile number linked to your Salik tag. You receive an SMS within seconds showing the exact balance and the date of the last deduction. This method works without internet and costs AED 0.30 per message.

Check balance on the RTA website

Visit rta.ae and select “Salik” from the top menu. Click “Check Balance” and enter your Salik tag number or registered mobile. The page displays the AED amount and any pending violations.

Top-up options and minimum amounts

The RTA app lets you add funds instantly with a saved card or Apple Pay. The minimum top-up is AED 50. SMS top-up works by texting TOPUP followed by the amount to 2424; the lowest amount accepted is AED 100. Website users can pay by card or link a bank account with the same AED 50 minimum. Cash top-ups are available at DEWA payment machines and selected petrol stations for AED 50 or more.

Auto top-up and low-balance alerts

In the RTA app go to “Salik Settings” and toggle “Auto Top-up”. Choose a trigger balance of AED 20 and an amount of AED 100. You can also activate SMS or push alerts when the balance falls below AED 30 so you never drive with zero funds.

Common issues and fixes

• Tag not recognised: ensure the tag number matches the one shown in the app; clean the windshield sticker if needed.
• SMS not received: confirm the mobile number in your Salik profile is correct and has credit for the AED 0.30 fee.
• Payment declined: try another card or use the website if the app fails; RTA blocks cards that have failed three times in 24 hours.
