WPS (Wage Protection System) Explained for Employees
WPS ensures your salary lands on time every month. Learn how the system works, what to check on your payslip, and the steps if payments are delayed.
What WPS actually does
The Wage Protection System is run by the Central Bank of the UAE and MOHRE. Every employer with more than five staff must pay salaries through approved banks or exchange houses. The system records the transfer and flags any delay or shortfall automatically.
How your salary reaches you
Employers upload a salary file before the 15th of each month. The bank then credits your chosen UAE account, usually within one to three working days. You receive an SMS from the bank and the amount appears under the reference “WPS Salary.” No cash or personal transfer is allowed for basic pay.
What you should check every month
- Basic salary matches the amount written in your MOHRE contract.
- Allowances and overtime are listed separately on the payslip.
- Payment date falls no later than the contractual payday.
- Bank reference clearly shows “WPS” and the employer name.
Keep digital copies of every payslip and contract. These records are accepted by MOHRE if you ever need to raise a complaint.
If payment is late or missing
First, send a polite written reminder to HR and keep the email. If nothing arrives within seven days, open the MOHRE app or visit a MOHRE centre with your Emirates ID and contract. The ministry can freeze new visa applications for the company until wages are cleared.
Common mistakes expats make
Many workers accept cash “advances” instead of the official transfer. This breaks WPS rules and leaves you without proof. Others forget to update their bank details after changing jobs, so the salary bounces. Always confirm the IBAN on your labour card matches the one you gave HR.
Know your rights in 2026
Current rules state that salaries below AED 25,000 must be paid monthly through WPS. Domestic workers and free-zone staff have separate but similar systems. If your employer refuses to use WPS, they risk fines up to AED 5,000 per unpaid worker and possible licence suspension.

Frequently asked questions
How long can my employer legally delay salary under WPS?▾
MOHRE considers any delay past the contractual payday a violation. You can file a complaint after seven days without payment.
Do free-zone companies have to follow WPS?▾
Yes. All mainland and most free-zone employers with over five staff must route salaries through the WPS platform in 2026.
What happens if my bank rejects the WPS transfer?▾
The employer must retry within 24 hours. If it fails again, contact MOHRE; the company can be penalised for non-compliance.
