What Happens on Expiry Day

Your residence or visit visa ends at midnight on the listed expiry date. From the next calendar day the ICP system marks you as overstaying and begins calculating fines. No separate notice is sent, so mark the date in your calendar and set a reminder at least two weeks earlier.

Daily Fine Amounts in 2026

ICP charges AED 50 per day for the first 10 days after expiry. Days 11 to 60 cost AED 100 per day. After day 60 the rate rises to AED 200 per day with no upper limit. Tourists on a 30 or 60-day visa face the same schedule. Residence-visa holders pay the same rates until they either renew or exit the country.

Grace Periods You Can Use

Only two official grace windows exist. If your visa expires while you are outside the UAE, you have 30 days after return to apply for a new visa or extension without fine. If you are inside the country, the first 10 days after expiry are still fined at AED 50 per day; no free window applies inside the UAE.

How to Regularise an Overstay

Visit an ICP service centre or use the ICP app to pay the accumulated fines first. You must settle the full amount before any new application is accepted. Once fines are cleared you can either apply for a new residence visa through your sponsor, convert to a tourist visa if eligible, or book an exit flight. Keep the payment receipt, as airlines and immigration officers may ask to see it at departure.

Consequences Beyond Fines

After 30 days of overstay your Emirates ID is automatically cancelled if you hold one. Banks may freeze accounts linked to the ID. Future visa applications can be delayed or refused until the overstay record is cleared. Employers are required by MOHRE to verify valid residency before issuing new contracts, so an overstay can also affect job offers.

Practical Tips to Avoid Problems

Set two calendar reminders: one 30 days before expiry and another 10 days before. Keep digital copies of your visa, passport, and Emirates ID in a secure cloud folder. If you plan to travel near the expiry date, confirm your return flight lands at least 48 hours before the visa ends. For urgent cases, authorised typing centres can submit extension requests on the same day for an extra service fee of AED 100 to 300.
