How Notice Periods Work in UAE Employment
UAE notice periods vary by contract type. Know your notice length, salary rights during notice, and rules for early exit under 2026 labour law.
Notice periods under UAE labour law
Every employment contract in the UAE must state a notice period. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) sets the default rules when a contract is silent. Most private-sector roles follow the standard 30-day notice, yet some senior or project-based roles list 60 or 90 days. Always check the signed contract first.
Fixed-term versus unlimited contracts
Fixed-term contracts run until the end date. If you resign early, you must still serve the agreed notice or pay compensation equal to the remaining salary for the notice period. Unlimited contracts allow either side to end the relationship with notice. In both cases the notice length cannot be less than 30 days unless the role is covered by a collective agreement.
Salary and benefits during notice
During the notice period you receive your normal basic salary plus any housing or transport allowances listed in the contract. If your employer waives the notice and asks you to leave immediately, they must pay you the full notice salary in a lump sum. Accrued annual leave not taken before the notice ends must also be paid out.
Early termination and penalties
If you leave without serving notice, your employer can deduct one month’s basic salary from your final settlement or ask you to pay the equivalent amount. The same rule applies if the employer terminates without notice. The final settlement, including end-of-service gratuity, is calculated only after the notice period or its payment is settled.
How to submit or receive notice
Notice must be given in writing, either by email with read receipt or through the MOHRE portal. Keep a copy. Once notice is accepted, your employer updates your labour card status. You remain entitled to use your UAE residence visa until the notice ends or a new visa is issued.
Special cases: probation and senior roles
During probation either party can end the contract with 14 days’ notice or payment in lieu. Executive contracts above AED 30,000 monthly basic salary sometimes carry 90-day notice clauses. These longer periods must be stated clearly in the offer letter and registered with MOHRE.
