NOL Card Guide for Tourists 2026: Buy, Top Up, and Use
NOL card guide for tourists in 2026: buy, top up, check fares, and use on Dubai Metro, trams, and buses with RTA rules.
Why Tourists Need a NOL Card in Dubai
Public transport in Dubai runs on the RTA network. A NOL card gives you the cheapest fares on Metro, trams, and buses. Without it you pay the single-journey ticket price of 25 AED every ride, which adds up fast for short trips.
The card itself costs 25 AED and works across the entire system. You can load Silver, Gold, or Blue passes or just keep a pay-as-you-go balance.
Where to Buy a NOL Card in 2026
Pick one up at any Dubai Metro station ticket office or vending machine. Airport stations T1, T2, and T3 all sell them. Major bus terminals and some malls also have machines. Bring cash or a contactless card, the machines accept both.
Choose the standard blue card for most tourists. Gold cards give extra comfort on Gold Class carriages but cost 5 AED more to buy.
How to Top Up and Check Balance
Top up at the same machines or inside stations. Minimum top-up is 10 AED. Machines display your current balance before you pay. You can also use the RTA Dubai app to add money with a credit card.
Check your balance at any gate by tapping the card. The screen shows remaining credit and the last journey amount. Keep at least 3 AED on the card to avoid the insufficient-balance message at entry gates.
Fares and Zones in 2026
Dubai uses a zone system. Most tourist areas sit in zones 1 to 3. A single trip within one zone costs 3 AED with a NOL card. Two zones cost 5 AED and three zones cost 7.5 AED. Journeys longer than three zones stay at 7.5 AED.
Tram rides cost the same as Metro. Bus trips inside Dubai cost 3 AED for one zone. You can transfer between Metro, tram, and bus within 90 minutes without extra charge as long as you stay within the zones paid.
How to Use the Card Correctly
Tap in at the yellow gates when entering a station or bus. Tap out when leaving. If you forget to tap out you pay the maximum fare for that line. Keep the card away from phones and keys to avoid damage to the chip.
Children under five travel free. Students and seniors can apply for discounted cards at RTA customer service centres with passport and photo.
