Dubai School Admission Age Cutoff 2026: KHDA Rules
Dubai schools follow strict KHDA age cut-offs for September 2026 entry. Know the exact dates for FS1, Year 1 and Year 7 before you apply.
Why KHDA sets age cut-offs
KHDA requires every Dubai private school to follow the same age rules for September 2026 entry. The dates protect children from being placed in the wrong year group and keep classes balanced across the emirate.
FS1 (Foundation Stage 1) entry
Children must turn 3 years old on or before 31 August 2026. This means a child born on or before 31 August 2023 is eligible. Most nurseries and FS1 classes open applications in October 2025 for the following September.
Year 1 entry
Students must turn 5 on or before 31 August 2026. The birth-date window is therefore 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021. Schools will not accept a child who turns 5 after 31 August 2026 into Year 1; they must wait until the next academic year.
Year 7 entry
Year 7 is the first year of secondary school. Students must turn 11 on or before 31 August 2026, so the eligible birth dates run from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2015. Schools rarely grant exceptions; any request needs written KHDA approval.
Documents you need
- Valid Emirates ID or passport copy for the child
- Birth certificate (attested if issued outside the UAE)
- Most recent school report (for Year 1 and Year 7 transfers)
- Medical fitness certificate from DHA-approved centres
- Two passport photos
Application timeline for September 2026
Many popular schools open online portals in October 2025. KHDA recommends submitting forms by 31 January 2026 to secure assessment slots. Offers are usually sent between February and April, with final registration and fee payment due by 30 April 2026. Late applications are accepted only if places remain.
Transferring mid-year
If you move to Dubai after September 2026, KHDA allows entry at any time provided the child meets the age rule for that year group and the school has space. You must also obtain a transfer certificate attested by the Ministry of Education in your previous country and by the UAE embassy.
Common questions parents ask
Some families request early entry for gifted children. KHDA reviews each case individually and requires an educational psychologist report plus school assessment results. Approval is not guaranteed and remains rare.
