Why Update Your Name on UAE Documents

Life events such as marriage, divorce, or a legal name change abroad often require you to update your UAE records. Leaving old details in place can block visa renewals, bank transactions, and property deals. ICP and the issuing authorities expect all core documents to match your current passport.

Step 1: Prepare Supporting Documents

Collect your current passport, marriage certificate or court order, and a certified translation if the document is not in English or Arabic. Bring two passport photos that meet the 2026 ICA photo rules and a completed name-change application form from ICP. If the change happened outside the UAE, first legalise the foreign document through the UAE embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Step 2: Submit to ICP for Visa and Emirates ID

Book an ICP appointment through the ICP smart services app. At the centre you pay AED 300 for the visa amendment and AED 100 for the new Emirates ID. Biometrics are taken again and the new card is usually ready in five to seven working days. Keep the old Emirates ID until you receive the replacement.

Step 3: Update Driving Licence and Vehicle Registration

Visit any RTA customer happiness centre with your new Emirates ID and passport. The licence update costs AED 100 and the vehicle registration change is AED 150. Both updates are completed the same day in most centres. Failure to update can lead to fines during traffic stops or when selling a car.

Step 4: Notify Banks, DEWA, and Your Employer

Send a copy of the new Emirates ID to your bank, DEWA, and HR department. Most banks complete the name update within two working days once they verify the ICP stamp. DEWA requires the change in person or through their app with the new ID uploaded. Your employer must then inform MOHRE so the work permit stays aligned.

Step 5: Timeline and Common Pitfalls

Allow three to four weeks from first ICP appointment to final bank confirmation. The most frequent issue is mismatched spellings between the passport and the court order; double-check every document before submission. If you hold property, also inform DLD so the title deed reflects the new name and avoids delays at future sale.
