Who Can Sponsor Family in Abu Dhabi in 2026

Only residents holding valid Abu Dhabi residence visas issued by ICP can sponsor a spouse and children. The sponsor must be employed or self-employed and meet the salary threshold set by ICP. Freelance or remote workers without a UAE contract usually cannot sponsor family.

2026 ICP Salary Threshold for Family Sponsorship

ICP requires a minimum basic salary of AED 4,000 per month. In addition, the sponsor must receive a housing allowance of at least AED 2,500 per month or provide proof of suitable accommodation owned or rented in their name. The combined income must be verifiable through a valid labour contract stamped by MOHRE or the Free Zone authority.

Salaries paid in cash or through informal arrangements are not accepted. The employment contract must state both the basic salary and housing allowance separately. If the contract shows only a lump-sum figure, ICP will not split it for the purpose of meeting the threshold.

How Housing Allowance Is Calculated

ICP accepts either a stated housing allowance on the contract or proof of rent paid. Acceptable proof includes a valid Ejari tenancy contract registered with DLD, a property title deed, or a company housing letter. The monthly rent or allowance must equal or exceed AED 2,500. If rent is lower, the sponsor must top up the difference with an increased basic salary to reach the combined AED 6,500 effective income.

Allowances for utilities, transport or education are not counted toward the housing requirement. Only the explicit housing component or actual rent paid counts.

• Valid passport and Emirates ID of the sponsor
• Labour contract or free-zone employment certificate showing salary breakdown
• Tenancy contract or title deed proving accommodation
• Marriage certificate and birth certificates attested and translated if issued outside the UAE
• Medical fitness test results from an approved Abu Dhabi centre
• Emirates ID application forms and passport photos for each family member

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Ensure your employment contract meets the AED 4,000 basic salary plus AED 2,500 housing rule.

2. Obtain attested family documents from your home country’s UAE embassy or via the ICP e-attestation portal.

3. Book a medical fitness test for all family members at an ICP-approved centre in Abu Dhabi.

4. Submit the entry permit application through ICP’s online portal or at an Amer centre. Pay the visa fees (AED 1,000–1,200 per person for a two-year residency).

5. After entry, complete Emirates ID biometrics and medical results upload within 60 days.

6. Receive the family residence visas. Renewals follow the same salary verification each time.

Common Reasons for Rejection

ICP rejects applications when the basic salary is below AED 4,000, when housing allowance is missing or unverifiable, or when family documents lack proper attestation. Part-time or commission-only contracts are frequently declined unless a guaranteed minimum salary is stated.
