What counts as absconding in the UAE in 2026

An absconding case is triggered when an employer files a report with MOHRE stating that an employee has left the job without notice or approval. The report becomes active once MOHRE records it in the worker’s file. Common triggers include failing to return after approved leave, stopping work without resignation, or not responding to official notices for more than seven days.

Consequences of an active absconding report

While the report is active you cannot transfer your visa, renew your Emirates ID, or apply for a new work permit. You may also face a fine of AED 5,000 to AED 15,000 depending on how long the case stays open. In addition, MOHRE can impose a one-year or three-year work ban, and banks may freeze accounts linked to the cancelled residence visa.

How employers file and cancel reports

Employers submit the report through the MOHRE online portal or at a Tadbeer centre. To cancel the same report the employer must log in again, upload a cancellation request, and pay any outstanding fees. Once cancelled, MOHRE updates the status within three to five working days and the employee regains the right to apply for new permits.

Steps to remove an absconding case yourself

First, contact your former employer in writing and request cancellation. If there is no response within ten days, visit a MOHRE service centre with your passport, Emirates ID copy, and labour contract. File a dispute under “Absconding Cancellation Request.” Pay the AED 200 filing fee and attend any scheduled hearing. Keep every receipt and reference number.

After the case is closed

Once MOHRE clears the report you can immediately apply for a new job offer and start the visa transfer process. Check your status on the ICP and MOHRE portals before signing any new contract. Clear any unpaid fines or medical test fees to avoid fresh blocks on your file.
